International students


Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment and to the University of Cape Town, one of South Africa's leading universities. The Faculty takes great pride in the quality of its undergraduate programmes, its comprehensive postgraduate programmes and the excellent research carried out in the departments.

The University is currently home to over 3 900 international students from 97 different countries and welcomes the diversity and contribution that these students bring. We invite you to be a part of our diverse and vibrant community.

Applying to the EBE Faculty

View the 2014 undergraduate admission requirements to the degrees offered in the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment.

Prospective undergraduate and postgraduate international students who intend to study for a full degree at UCT should complete Application Form 1.

International students who intend to study at UCT for only one or two semesters, or international students who wish to be affiliated to UCT for short periods in both cases not obtaining credit towards a South African degress, should complete Application Form 6.

English language proficiency

The medium of instruction and examination at UCT is English.

International applicants for whom English is a second language are required to submit one of the following:

Information on the IELTS is available through the British Council at the British consulate or embassy in your country.

Funding for international students

Undergraduate International students will need to fund their own studies. The University is unable to offer financial aid to international students

A limited number of scholarships are available to graduates who are not South African. These are awarded on a competitive basis and preference is given to senior candidates.

The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment offers a generous system of international scholarships to encourage student diversity. The scholarships are awarded to postgraduates registering for the first time on the basis of academic merit. The award is granted for one academic year at a time. Download the application form. All applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the head of the incipient host department. This is obtained by the Faculty Office. Applications are considered by a panel of senior Faculty academics who make a recommendation to the Dean for final decision.

Applications for renewal must be submitted by letter together with a progress report signed by the Supervisor by not later than 30th November.
