Affordable Housing in South Africa

5 Mar 2012 - 13:30

VirulyAssociate Professor Francois Viruly

Francois Viruly, an independent property economist and associate professor in the Department of Construction Economics and Management at the University of Cape Town, talks about his study of the residential property market and his view that better housing can reduce healthcare costs.

The housing construction sector boasts one of the highest employment multipliers in South Africa, and has the potential to significantly address unemployment in the country, according to his research findings released this week.

The housing subsidies announced in the President's State of the Nation Address and the Finance Minister's budget speech may well represent arguably the single biggest policy change to date. A/Professor Viruly is joined in the studio by ABN's Godfrey Mutizwa to discuss the social impact of affordable housing in South Africa.
