Nicholas Rice, a 2012 chemical engineering graduate from UCT, is one of four South Africans who received one of the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship for postgraduate study in 2013. In September, he will be jetting off to start his MPhil in advanced chemical engineering at the University of Cambridge.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK who wish to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree. Applicants need to show academic excellence with a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others. 3 500 applicants applied, and 90 new scholarships were awarded, 39 from the USA and 51 from around the world.
The programme aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.
