Dear Applicant
We are delighted that you are considering postgraduate study in the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment. The Faculty is strongly committed to continuing to develop and grow its research activities and in this regard it is vital to ensure that our academic staff are active as researchers and that we have top-class postgraduate research students.
Before making a formal application for postgraduate study you are strongly advised to contact the Department in order to obtain advice about your proposed study. (See contact details below.) Making contact with the Department is particularly important for candidates interested in research since they must ensure that the Department has the facilities and the expert supervision that will be necessary. Any new research postgraduate student has to be assigned to an academic staff member. It is helpful for the candidate and the Department to identify in advance any special conditions that may apply in the candidate's proposed area of study. The Department can also advise of any funding opportunities they may be aware of for postgraduate students.
It is essential that postgraduate students interested in taught masters programmes (i.e. masters programmes primarily by coursework) and postgraduate diplomas also contact the relevant departments (see list below) so that they are fully aware of the structure of these programmes.
The Faculty welcomes applications for postgraduate study from international students. It is important that you are aware, that as an international student, you are responsible for funding your studies for the duration of your degree programme. You will need to take into consideration the cost of air fares, visas, medical insurance, tuition fees, books, daily travel, food and clothing. Your fees are payable prior to registration. A limited number of scholarships are available to graduates who are not South African. These are awarded on a competitive basis and preference is given to senior candidates. The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment offers a generous system of international scholarships to encourage student diversity. The scholarships are awarded to first time registering postgraduates on the basis of academic merit. The award is granted for one academic year at a time. International students should apply to their own government or appropriate ministry for details on funding. Students with outstanding debts will not be permitted to register the following year or to graduate.
View guidelines for international postgraduate applicants, view international full degree study information, or email Carol Ojwang.
Funding
Limited financial support is available in the form of scholarships, bursaries and student loans. Certain awards are granted exclusively on academic merit, while others take financial need into account.
View information on funding your studies, email the Grad centre, or telephone +27 21 650 2206 / 3926 / 2141 / 2205.
You need to ensure you are in a position to finance your studies and support yourself before proceeding with your plans.
