Awards


Best Paper Award

Eugene Golovins and Keoikantse Marungwana, Doctoral and Masters candidates respectively, of the Communications Research Group in the Department of Electrical Engineering, were awarded two of the three Best Paper Awards from the recent Southern African Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC 2009), held at the Royal Swazi Spa in Swaziland early in September 2009.

Student Leadership Awards

Award for the Most Outstanding Student Leader in a Society or a Student Organisation was awarded to Wandile Mamba - a 3rd year Chemical Engineering Student.

The citation read as follows: The first recipient of this award is described as a true leader and someone with great potential to be very influential in this country in the upcoming years. The recipient is a role model for many students, and was a mentor in the UCT Emerging Leaders Programme; was a member of the SRC Societies Council; served on the executive committee of the UCT Hip Hop Club; volunteered for SHAWCO. Under the recipient’s leadership this student organization has grown from strength to strength with projects that encourage responsible citizenship; academic excellence and personal development. Initiatives include corporate networking evenings; partnerships with Inkanyezi and the South African Education Programme in support of community outreach; a Women's Day programme; and partnership with UCT School Development Unit and the Rural Support Network. The recipient is a chemical engineering student, was elected Vice President of the SRC for 2010 and is the current Chairperson of the UCT Black Management Forum. (BFM)
